ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ON THE OCCASION OF COMMEMORATION AND CELEBRATION OF DEMOCRACY DAY 

Fellow Nigerians, Today, June The 12th, marks another Democracy Day anniversary and an occasion to celebrate freedom and unity of our Nation.


2. From 1999, we consistently celebrated Democracy Day to mark the end of military rule and the return of power and control into the hands of those freely elected by the people. On this day, Nigerians recommit themselves to ensuring we protect and preserve the ideals of democracy.


3. In 2018, we moved Democracy Day from 29th of May to the 12th of June. This change was to remind all Nigerians of one free election after which the presumed winner along with Nigerians were denied their rights and their choice.


4. On June 12th 1993, Nigerians saw the best in our citizens as we all went out to vote peacefully. By June 24th 1993, we also saw the worst of our leadership as the elections were annulled.


5. We must never forget the sacrifices of the heroes of Nigeria’s democracy during 1993. Their patriotism and peaceful struggle should guide our actions especially when it comes to electing our leaders and holding them accountable, now and in future.

Nigerian man kills self after shooting wife, grandmother in US

  A Nigerian man, Obinna Igbokwe, on Thursday died by suicide after shooting his wife, Tangela, and grandmother in Texas, United States of America. NBC reported that Igbokwe left home with his three-month-old son, after shooting both women in their heads on Wednesday. Though the wife is critically injured and hospitalised, her grandmother died from the injury. While on the run, Igbokwe dropped the child in a car seat at a local hotel. When the police were alerted of his presence in the area, the suspect shot himself and died from the injury. A statement from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday read, “On June 2, 2022, at about 12:00am, detectives with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office were contacted by the Corsicana Police Department and advised they had Mansa Igbokwe in their care. “According to the Corsicana Police Department, a male dropped off the child in a car seat at a local hotel and said he would be right back, but never returned. “Since the male did not ret

EFCC declares pastor, wife wanted for alleged N2bn fraud

  A couple, Onyinmiebi (Miebi Baraza) and Beatrice Bribena, has been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. In a statement, the EFCC declared the couple wanted for allegedly defrauding Nigerians to the tune of N2 billion. The statement was signed by Head, Media and Publicity of EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren.
